You probably know Millwood Servicing Ltd for our essential fire safety and engineering work around London and the Home Counties. Focusing on compliance and maintenance, with the primary goal of protecting buildings and the people inside. But beyond our technical work, Millwood is deeply involved in the community and tackling social challenges, efforts strongly backed by CEO Matt Wood. We truly believe that doing good business and doing good for the community can (and should!) go hand-in-hand.
Millwood Servicing actively weaves its values into daily operations, showing that business goals can align with helping society. This approach is part of our company culture, from creating opportunities through apprenticeships to taking on major personal challenges for charity.
Our drive comes from both our company spirit and the personal values of our team. For CEO Matt Wood, a successful business is a way to make a difference, often inspired by personal experiences. He has shared how his family and friends' experiences with cancer strengthened his desire to support organisations like Cancer Research UK (CRUK).
Matt’s experience helping a friend, Dave, with his beehives during his battle with Multiple Myeloma showed firsthand the importance of research and support, turning a personal connection into a powerful reason to fundraise.
Speaking of big challenges, Matt is taking on the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race. He's gearing up to sail the entire 40,000 nautical miles in the 2027-28 event.
This challenge involves:
It's a huge test of physical and mental strength.
Matt is using this race to raise significant funds and awareness for three chosen charities:
The goal? £60,000! Getting sponsors on board is key – big thanks to Eyre & Elliston and our other corporate sponsors for being early supporters! We'd love more partners (especially fellow B Corps who care about sustainability!) to join in. Please get in touch with us here!
The WoodMor Foundation C.I.C, co-founded by Matt and Clare Wood, is particularly important to them. It tackles unfair hiring practices head-on.
The foundation works to fight social exclusion by:
A really cool part of this is creating new ways for people to shine – like personalised "MeMovie™" videos. These let people showcase their skills and potential in a lively way, different from a traditional CV. The aim is a fairer chance for candidates who might get missed by the usual methods.
Our focus on creating opportunities reaches into the fire safety industry with the Zero2Hero programme, running since 2009. This programme develops the next generation of fire safety experts through guidance, focused training, and support for personal and technical growth.
The programme offers a clear career path in fire safety and engineering, giving participants key technical skills and professional qualities:
By investing in new talent, Millwood builds its future team and adds skilled professionals to the industry, making buildings safer for everyone. This is a long-term investment in people.
While the Clipper Race and The WoodMor Foundation are big projects, Millwood’s community involvement is continuous. Matt Wood’s past fundraising, like finishing the London Costume Marathon and raising over £30,000 for London's Air Ambulance, is a prime example of the type of work we strive to do.
"For now, we simply want to thank everyone who helped achieve our own target, including all the people who came to and contributed to our 8th and final charity golf day this year - that raised a whopping £7,500 for LAA."
Millwood encourages staff to get involved in community projects and supports local initiatives and volunteering. We look for partnerships with local groups whose values match our focus on ethical practices and community well-being. This shows we understand our place in the local area and want to make a positive contribution.
In all that we do, we try to make responsible choices, like using environmentally friendly sourcing and following ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) principles in how we work. This ensures our charity work isn't separate, but part of an overall approach to responsible business.
Things like using sustainable materials, cutting down waste, and operating ethically just make sense alongside supporting community groups and helping our team develop. Our goal is a business that's successful, sure, but also one that makes a positive mark on society and the planet.
So, while our day job is all about critical fire safety, we hope you can see that Millwood Servicing Ltd believes top-quality service and a strong social conscience belong together. Driven by Matt's passion and our company values, things like the Clipper Race, The WoodMor Foundation, and the Zero2Hero programme show we care about more than just the bottom line.
We like to think our actions show that being responsible can be baked right into a company's DNA. By investing in people, supporting causes we believe in, and focusing on fairness and sustainability, we reckon being a leading fire safety specialist and making a real, positive difference actually help each other. (And we think that's pretty cool!)
