The 2005 Fire Safety Order

The 2005 Fire Safety Order came into effect on October 1st 2006. If your company has not a fire risk assessment that complies with the 2005 Fire Safety Order, there are three areas of immediate concern that could apply to you:

  • You could be liable for a fine (anything between £3,000 and £240,000).
  • You could be faced with a potential 2 years imprisonment for ignoring the order.
  • Your company premises could be served a prohibition notice restricting use.

If you have a fire certificate that pre-dates 1st October 2006 then you are not complying with regulations and may have cause for concern.

What is a fire risk assessment?

A fire risk assessment is an organised and methodical look at the premises, the activities carried out on the premises and the likelihood that a fire could start and cause harm to those in and around the premises.

The primary aims of the fire risk assessment are:

  • To identify the fire hazards.
  • To reduce the risk of those hazards causing harm to a level as low as is reasonably practicable.
  • To decide what physical fire precautions and management arrangements are necessary to ensure the safety of people in the premises and the immediate area.

Adopting the methodology set out in PAS79: 2007 our consultants will undertake the fire risk assessment of your premises and produce a written report. The report will clearly set out the measures that are already in place to control fire risks and any necessary measures which should be taken to mitigate risk further.

Your FRA report includes;

  • A simple action plan to help you confidently complete the steps identified to minimise risk of fire and demonstrate compliance with your legal and insurance obligations.
  • Details of your local fire and rescue service contact for you to establish a good liaison with them.
  • The provision to carry out reviews in forthcoming years via a simplified version of your original report and more importantly the skills for you to carry this out. All in a digital report sent through via email to store securely and to help the environment

FAQs

I have a fire certificate… will that be enough?

Fire certificates are no longer valid. However a fairly recent fire certificate will be a good starting point for your fire risk assessment.

Will the assessment need renewing?

Your fire risk assessment should be reviewed and updated continuously to keep it a live document. In particular, it should be updated following any change in premises, processes or the number of people employed. It is good practice to review it at intervals not exceeding 12 months.

What will it cost?

The cost for the fire risk assessment depends on the size and type of your building, please call us to discuss this further. All costs include the initial visit, subsequent communications until your assessment is complete, plus the first years review.

What will I receive?

We will visit your premises and carry out a full and concise fire risk assessment using an industry accepted pro forma template approved by the BSI, the BRE and the FPA.
Once completed we will then guide you through the report and its findings and assist you in achieving the most effective outcome for your site.
The cost also includes your first annual review upon the anniversary of this assessment.
For any remedial works necessary to comply with the Fire Safety Order, Millwood offers a 20% discount to carry out these works on your behalf.
